Your shift pattern:

Our students spend their day in our School or College, with some also doing work placements or qualifications elsewhere, after which they return to our residential care flats. The shift pattern for this role is therefore outside of ‘school hours’.

There are 2 teams that you may be placed in, each team works 42 hours per week, details of which can be discussed further at interview:

• 2 teams that share a 2-week rota including weekends (working some evenings including sleep-ins, and 1 in every 2 weekends during the term)
• a team that work Monday to Friday across morning and afternoon/evening hours.

The Deaf Academy is recruiting for Learning Leaders to join our college team in supporting Deaf students in our college. This would suit someone with experience in adult social care or adult education background.

This is a fantastic opportunity to change the lives of Deaf students while developing your own skills – the Academy delivers in house BSL qualifications during work hours, so you can learn on the job!

You will be supporting young people to achieve their academic ambitions but also prepare for independence. Alongside assisting the Classroom Teacher in planning, monitoring, assessments and effective teaching and learning of all students.

Key responsibilities: 

• Good English, numeracy and writing skills.
• Ability to understand and follow procedures.
• Contribute effectively to teacher planning and preparation of lessons.
• Monitor student’s participation and progress, providing feedback to teachers and giving constructive support to pupils as they learn.
• Communicate effectively and sensitively with pupils to support their learning.
• Promote and support the inclusion of deaf pupils and all pupils in their learning activities.
• To be responsible for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children and young adults responsible for (or come into contact with) in accordance with the Academy’s Safeguarding Policy & Procedures.
• Contribute to planning, recording and implementation of Student Support Plans.

Key Requirements:

• Experience of working within an education or adult social care setting (or an equivalent position)
• Ability to relate well to students, colleagues, other professionals and parents
• GCSE A-C / 4-9 in English and Maths (or ability to undertake these and work towards them once you start in the job)
• Promote and safeguard the welfare of students/young people

Every day at the Deaf Academy is different. One moment you may be supporting a student to access a qualification in the classroom, the next you could be facilitating communication during a work placement, supporting a learner on a supported internship, helping a young person develop their independence skills, or enabling full participation in enrichment activities and events.

As a Communication Support Worker, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring Deaf students can fully access learning, achieve meaningful qualifications, gain valuable workplace experience, and develop the confidence, communication skills and self-advocacy needed for successful adult lives. Working as part of a specialist multidisciplinary team, you will help create inclusive, accessible environments where Deaf young people can thrive, achieve their ambitions and realise their potential.

What you’ll be doing

In addition to providing high-quality BSL communication support, you will:

• Support learners across Level 1, 2 and 3 programmes
• Provide communication support in educational, community and workplace settings
• Act as a mentor for less experienced CSWs
• Contribute to annual reviews and EHCP processes
• Support quality assurance and best practice within the CSW team
• Work collaboratively with teaching staff to develop multimodal learning environments
• Support students undertaking supported internships and preparation for adulthood programmes

Essential Requirements

• BSL Level 3 qualification (or equivalent) or progress towards higher-level qualifications
• Signature Level 3 Professional Communication Support qualification (or equivalent)
• GCSE Maths and English (Grade 4/C or above)
• Experience supporting Deaf learners in education or workplace settings
• Strong understanding of Deaf Culture and the Deaf Community
• Knowledge of SEND, EHCPs and inclusive practice
• Excellent written, note-taking and interpersonal skills

• Edexcel Professional Development Award for CSWs
• CACDP Note-taking qualification
• Job coaching experience
• Experience delivering Deaf Awareness training
• Experience mentoring or supporting colleagues

Essential Requirements

• Accredited BSL Level 2 qualification or equivalent.
• Actively working towards BSL Level 3.
• GCSE Maths and English (Grade 4/C or above) or equivalent.
• Experience communicating with Deaf people through work, volunteering, education or lived experience.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
• Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of young people.

Development Pathway

As a Trainee Communication Support Worker, you will be supported to progress towards becoming a qualified Communication Support Worker through:

• Achieving BSL Level 3
• Undertaking the Signature Level 3 Award in Professional Communication Support for Deaf Learners (or equivalent recognised Communication Support qualification)
• Developing specialist skills in communication support, Deaf awareness, educational inclusion and supported internships
• Receiving mentoring, supervision and ongoing professional development from experienced CSW+ colleagues
