Learn with Us
Our Academy has been providing education and care for Deaf young people since 1826. With a language-rich environment of British Sign Language (BSL) and English, and a bespoke curriculum for each young person, the Academy is a place where they learn and develop the confidence to engage with the wider world and participate in it as independent people.
We specialise in supporting Deaf children and young people who also have multiple or complex additional needs, including multi-sensory impairment, autism and physical disabilities. Through our curriculum we are able to provide tailored learning pathways, to ensure all of our students are studying in the way that is right for them.

Our recent Ofsted report (February 2023) stated :
“One pupil described the school as ‘paradise’. Others agree, saying that they are in a place where they can communicate, feel heard and feel visible.”
Case Study : Molly
Molly joined the Academy when she was 12, arriving from a mainstream school. At the Academy she was able to study a range of subjects with communication support, which was vital for her. Molly studied for her English and Maths GCSEs, as well as achieving a BSL qualification. She also attained her Drama GCSE.
Coming to the Deaf Academy allowed Molly to explore her love of Drama, and her achievements include winning the prestigious NDCS ‘Raising the Bar’ competition, where she was selected from young Deaf children across the country to attend a special drama course.
Molly is now at Exeter College, studying Level 3 Media.
“Thanks to the Deaf Academy, our daughter has had the opportunity to discover and develop a passion for acting. She has found drama helps her express herself in a way that she hadn’t been able to before.” – Molly’s mum, Beth
