After much behind the scenes work with the Chair of East and Mid Devon Deaf Children’s Society (EMDDCS), we are pleased to have opened the doors of the first deaf youth club on Tuesday 23rd February. The Deaf Academy’s hall was filled with children from age 11 through to young adults ready for a fun and relaxing evening. It was a great atmosphere with everyone socialising and getting stuck into the activities on offer, including pool and arts and crafts. The tuck shop was a particular hit with proceeds being donated back into the club.
The club aims:
• To provide deaf children with a safe environment
• To build social skills, independence and self-confidence through attending the club
• To share, converse, and have fun with their peers
• To allow deaf children to be included in an environment that enables them to communicate in their most natural way, face to face and not through an interpreter
If you know of a child who would enjoy attending this free youth club for deaf children or those with a hearing loss please contact Claire on emddcs@hotmail.co.uk or Jayne on jdingle@exeterdeafacademy.ac.uk. The club runs every Tuesday during term time from 6pm-8pm in Exeter Deaf Academy’s school hall.
