Work Experience

The Academy is always delighted to receive enquires regarding work experience. In fact, some of our staff members choose to embark on a career with the Academy following a very positive period of work experience.

We encourage interest from people from all backgrounds including those who may be studying BSL, to those on a formal teaching qualification which requires a period of work placement. Previously we have also hosted placements for those within Year 10 or Year 11 of their academic studies and for those who may be at College studying Health and Social Care.

Residential Care Worker

Fixed term until July 2021 with the possibility of a permanent appointment

Hours: Fulltime, Monday to Friday (term time only) 
Salary: £16,322 (based on full time equivalent of £16,854)

 In September 2020, the Deaf Academy will open the doors of its new purpose-built facility in Exmouth. This new world-class Academy will change the lives of Deaf young people.

This centre of excellence will change the lives of Deaf young people and their families.

We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic and committed individual to provide care and Safeguard the welfare of our students, aged 4 – 25 years.

This is a great opportunity to be part of an inspiring team, whilst promoting the social, emotional wellbeing and development of the students. This role will give you a great opportunity to support our students in preparing them to develop their independent living skills, whilst supporting their education. We are looking for a dynamic individual who is self-motivated, resilient and able to work as part of a team working with children who are profoundly deaf and have additional needs.

In return this role will give you the opportunity to develop within a specialist care environment and be part of delivering life changing opportunities to our young people. You will also be given the opportunity if not already gained to achieve up to level 3 in British Sign Language qualification and undertake Level 3 Diploma in Health and Social Care.

The ideal candidate will have an experience of working within a residential environment, although this is not essential as full training will be provided.

    This role with currently be Monday to Friday with the working hours below:

    Monday 14.00 – 24.00

    Tuesday 07.30 – 09.30 & 14.00 – 24.00

    Wednesday 07.30 – 09.30 & 14.00 – 24.00

    Thursday 07.30 – 09.30 & 14.00 – 24.00

    Friday 07.30 – 09.30

    However, flexibility with regard to these hours can be discussed at interview.

    there is the option for the member of staff to sleep at the Academy and be paid a premium for doing so. 

    We would also be happy to accept applications for job share (2 days and 2 days) with the view to pick up additional bank shifts where needed

      Supply/Bank Residential Support Workers
      Hours: Part Time
      Salary: DOE – £8.78 to £9.70 per hour

      The Deaf Academy staff team are talented and dedicated and they transform the lives of young Deaf people in the heart of Devon. We are looking to recruit enthusiastic and pro-active individuals to join our “bank” of Residential Support Workers, who will be based in our Children’s Care Home (Rolle House).

      Rolle House is a 52 week provision, operating 365 days per year and which was recently graded as “Good” by Ofsted. This opportunity would suit those looking to combine part-time ad-hoc work with their studies or other supply/bank work.
