A huge congratulations goes to Tim Brigden, one of Exeter Deaf Academy’s Communications Support Workers (CSWs), who has gained a Purple Star for his work with the National Deaf Children’s Society (NDCS) over the summer.
Purple Stars recognise volunteers who have done something amazing whilst working on the NDCS’s summer multi-activity residential weekends for Deaf children. Tim received this award for his work on the five-day residential in The Gower Peninsula, Wales. However he also helped out at another residential in Litchfield and in total this is his 11th summer working with the NDCS!
Tim described his role as a mix of his work as a CSW and that of the Care Team at the Academy. Tim helped facilitate communication between the instructors and within the group of children on activities such as caving, abseiling, canoeing and zip wire whilst also looking after their welfare.
The person who nominated Tim for the award said, “Tim was very supportive and encouraged me to try communicating. It boosted my confidence and I would have been too nervous to do it without that encouragement! He was also fantastic with the children, making sure everyone was being spoken to and involved”.
The Deaf Academy would like to further congratulate Tim on his award and demonstrating the Academy values of being a communicator, caring and a team player whilst supporting Deaf children on this summer residential. Well done.
