In April, Deaf Academy College student Kenny undertook work experience as the Academy’s ‘Marketing Assistant’.

Kenny is studying Level 1 Digital Media with Exeter College. He has worked really hard and shown us that he has a strong talent in visual media.

Kenny said:

“This work experience has helped me to learn new things in marketing. I have learnt different ways of marketing so deaf and hearing people understand, which is important. I was involved in helping with the new College prospectus, filming students for online video and collecting press cuttings from newspapers.

I have learnt that there are lots of different ways of sharing news. For example, social media, website, newspapers and the prospectus. My favourite part of my work experience was going around taking photographs and filming. It’s important to share news visually.

The people I liked working with is Helen and Nicki. They are lovely to work with, and even made me a birthday cake! I would like to do this again because I find it very interesting and I feel confident because I did this work experience. I have changed my mind about my future job. I decided I now want to do this marketing job!”

After deciding that his future might lie in Marketing, Kenny secured work experience with local marketing agency Big Wave Media in June. Kenny worked with the graphic design team, account management, and the social media team. His campaign was designed to teach hearing people more about Deaf Awareness. He said:

“On the first day I was excited as I was looking forward to finding out what is it like in Bigwave Media. On the first and second days, it was a bit difficult to know how I could get hearing people to know about the Deaf Academy; then on the third and fourth days I was enjoying working with the Graphic Design team because I wanted to learn how to make a poster, leaflet and edit on different software. They taught me how to use different programmes and I found it very interesting and I was very happy that I learned how to use them.”

“During my time at Bigwave, I have learnt more that’s linked to my media course. This has helped me to know what jobs I want to do in future.”

Big Wave Media’s Nichola Birch said:

“Kenny had a fantastic time here. He said he has really learned a lot… he also wrote a blog post for us about his work experience. (And he kindly brought us a card and chocolates to say thanks which we really appreciated)!”

Thank you to Big Wave Media for helping Kenny to explore his future career even more, and well done Kenny for all your hard work!
