We’ve been learning about social media safety in School. Students recently took part in a workshop where a fictional Facebook Page for a skunk was used to teach our young learners about personal safety.

“Sammy the Skunk” was set up as a fake Facebook profile who tried to ‘befriend’ school students. Sammy’s fake Facebook profile raised discussion in the workshop about which students had accepted ‘friend requests’ from someone they did not know, and it demonstrated how Sammy could easily share their personal information with strangers.

The workshop was a fun way to teach a serious topic with the aim of increasing our student’s awareness of ‘stranger danger’, and the risks of accepting friend requests online from people they do not know.

Sammy the skunk ‘unfriended’ students after the workshop had finished. Age-appropriate information was also shared to raise awareness about keeping safe online, sexual health, relationships and personal safety.
