On 27-28 January we hosted our first Family Sign Weekend of 2018. These sessions are a fantastic opportunity for families, friends and professionals to learn about communicating with Deaf children.

The weekend was run by Deaf BSL teacher Nikki, along with School teacher Karma. Nikki and Karma taught the group essential communication tools, tips and vocabulary to help support Deaf children’s development.

Attendee Maria, who works at Powderham Castle, said:

‘I would like to thank Nikki, who is absolutely amazing! We learned loads, and look forward to putting it to use with the children and visitors who come to visit us. We can’t thank you enough.’

We’ve held our Family Sign Weekends since 2014 for families, friends and professionals that may know or work with a Deaf child. Our qualified and experienced Deaf Academy staff trainers deliver the National Deaf Children’s Society (NDCS) accredited Family Sign Language course in an inclusive and friendly environment. Split over two-days, a crèche, lunch and accommodation for families travelling from far away is also provided.

If you are interested in attending our next weekend (19-20 May) please get in touch.
