We are pleased to have supported another great England Deaf Rugby event as the first public taster session took place on Sunday 21st February 2016. Around forty deaf members of the public, including a number of Deaf Academy students, turned up to put their boots on and learn more about the sport. England Deaf players and coaches were on hand to show them the ropes.

Before the taster there was a chance to watch England Deaf get ready for their later match against Ide Select XV. The official morning began with a deaf awareness session for coaches and others, so they could learn to support deaf players in their own clubs. After this, the fun began with a taster training session supported by England Deaf players and coaches. Everyone got stuck in despite the muddy conditions.

A buffet was laid on for post-training nibbles and a chance to get to know each other and England Deaf. At 2:30pm 300 people gathered at Crediton RFC to watch England Deaf take on Ide Select XV. Ide started strong, scoring the first try, but during the second half England Deaf pulled back to end victors, with the score 12-5 to them. Alex, an Academy student, also took part in the match having becoming England Deaf’s water carrier. Maybe one day he will progress to a full player.

Discussions are already being held between England Deaf, South West RFU clubs and Exeter Deaf Academy about the next Open Event. If you would like to get involved or for more information contact England Deaf Head Coach, Fletch on edru@sky.com.
